AMES, Iowa – The Fiesta Bowl champions received more hardware Thursday night.
The 2020 Iowa State football team, a squad that set a standard of excellence unmatched by any other team in school history, received their Fiesta Bowl rings in a special ceremony held at the Sukup End Zone Club.
The ring symbolizes the accomplishments of a team that tied the school record for wins (9), broke the school mark for conference victories (8), played in its first Big 12 Championship game, won its first-ever New Year's Six bowl and earned its highest postseason ranking (No. 9 in the AP) in school history.
Each player accepted the ring from head coach Matt Campbell, who made sure to highlight how special this group was.
"There are so many people around here that made this possible," Campbell said. "I couldn't be prouder of you guys in how you represented this University."
The design of the ring was internal. Campbell picked senior captains Chase Allen and Greg Eisworth II to help with the composition.
The Iowa State logo surrounded by a shape of football is the prominent mark. It also featured the team record, score of the Fiesta Bowl (34-17 win over Oregon), final AP ranking and five stars signifying the team's "Five-Star Culture."
On the inside of the ring were chevron bars representing the jersey Jack Trice wore in 1923 with the words, "We Will" inscribed.
Eisworth was honored to assist in the project.
"The ring needed to encompass who we are as a program," Eisworth said. "The Five-Star Culture and the We Will were things that were really important to us. Of course we needed to celebrate the score and our ranking, but it was important for us to incorporate some of the other stuff that is meaningful to the team, like our culture and the Jack Trice stripes."
Like Eisworth, Allen wanted the rings to convey the culture of the team.
"A few of my favorite parts of the ring were the Jack Trice stripes, which we hit on a lot this year with everything going on in our society," Allen said. "The Five-Star Culture really defined the team and was why we were able to exceed so many expectations."
