OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Iowa State (32-21, 6-12 Big 12) closed out the 2021 Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship with a 3-1 victory over Baylor (27-21, 8-9 Big 12) in the fifth-place game on Sunday.
Senior Sami Williams became the Big 12's all-time hits leader in the game, collecting the 329th base hit of her career in the seventh inning to pass previous record-holder Norrelle Dickson (Oklahoma, 2004-07). Williams went 1-of-2 at the plate with two intentional walks in the game.
Catcher Mikayla Ramos went 2-of-4 at the dish with two RBI. Ramos now has 54 RBI on the season, tying the single-season school record set by Williams on Friday night vs. No. 9 Oklahoma State.
Starting pitcher Karlie Charles was simply phenomenal for the Cyclones in the circle. Charles put together a complete game victory while surrendering just two hits on the day, to go with four strikeouts.
Iowa State 3, Baylor 1
Baylor scored its lone run of the day in bottom of the first inning to jump ahead 1-0 early. Lou Gilbert earned a lead-off walk and stole second to open the frame. Emily Hott then collected a RBI double to left center, scoring Gilbert. However, Charles was dominant from that point forward, allowing just one hit the rest of the day.
She was also backed by an outstanding effort from her defense. In particular, Charles got help in the bottom of the fourth inning in the form of a robbed home run by center fielder Kali Gose. With Baylor still leading 1-0, Aliyah Binford hit a fly ball deep to left center that looked as if it may give the Lady Bears a two-run cushion. Gose reached over the fence, making the catch to pull the ball back into play, erasing a BU run and giving the Cyclones a spark.
Iowa State's offense responded in the top of the fifth inning. Senior Logan Schaben collected her second base hit of the day on a shot through the left side, and then advanced to second. Carli Spelhaug then drove a RBI single to center field, allowing Schaben to score and knot the game at 1-1. Following Williams' second intentional walk of the day, Ramos came up clutch with a two-out RBI single up the middle, plating Spelhaug to give Iowa State the lead.
Williams collected her record-breaking hit with a one-out double in the seventh, following swiftly by a Ramos RBI double that extended Iowa State's advantage to 3-1.
Charles slammed the door shut with her fourth 1-2-3 inning of the day, securing a fifth-place finish for the Cyclones at the 2021 Big 12 Championship.
