AMES -- No. 9 Iowa State could not overcome its turnovers and poor field position and lost to 10th-ranked Iowa 27-17 Saturday at MidAmerican Field at Jack Trice Stadium.
In the first Cy-Hawk game with both teams nationally ranked, Iowa (2-0) converted four ISU turnovers into 20 points on a steamy afternoon and beat the Cyclones (1-1) for the sixth-straight time.
Iowa also got a big lift from kickers Tory Taylor and Caleb Shudak in keeping the Cyclones pinned in their own territory for much of the game.
Taylor averaged 51.1 yards on eight punts and downed five inside the 20-yard line. Shudak, the son of former Iowa State kicker Jeff Shudak, put all of his kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks and booted field goals of 51 and 22 yards.
Breece Hall scored Iowa State's first touchdown on a 4-yard run at the end of the first half, capping a 54-second, 75-yard drive that cut Iowa's lead to 14-10. It was the 14th straight game in which Hall scored a rushing touchdown, the longest active streak nationally and one short of the Big 12 record.
But Hall found running lanes hard to come by for the second straight week and finished with 69 yards in 16 carries. He lost a fumble that Iowa's Jack Campbell scooped up and ran 6 yards for a touchdown, putting the Hawkeyes up 21-10 with 5:08 left in the third quarter.
ISU's Brock Purdy completed 13-of-27 passes for 138 yards, including a 49-yarder to Darren Wilson to set up Hall's touchdown, but was intercepted three times. Iowa turned Matt Hankins' interception at midfield into its first touchdown, a 4-yard run by Tyler Goodson, and got Shudak field goals after the two other picks, which included a second interception by Hankins.
Redshirt freshman Hunter Dekkers relieved Purdy in the fourth quarter and threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Tarique Milton with 3:27 left.
The ISU defense gave up just two offensive touchdowns, held the Hawkeyes to 174 total yards and sacked Spencer Petras four times. The Cyclones also kept Goodson in check, holding him to 55 yards in 21 carries, and limited Petras to 106 yards passing.
Iowa State finished with 339 yards, but the turnovers prevented the offense from developing any consistency. Iowa did not turn the ball over and now has gone 20 straight quarters against Iowa State without a turnover.
Cyclones Of Note
Dekkers got plenty of action in his relief role, completing 11-of-16 passes for 114 yards. The TD pass to Milton was the second of his career.
Will McDonald IV keeps adding to his sack total. He was credited with 1.5 Saturday to run his career total to 20, putting him alone in second place on the school's all-time list.
Tight end Charlie Kolar returned after missing the Northern Iowa game last week with a lower leg injury and caught four passes for 34 yards.
Linebacker Jake Hummel led the defense with eight tackles, including a sack and a second tackle for a loss.
