LUBBOCK, Texas – The Iowa State men showed strength in the second half of their race at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships to bring home a second place team showing at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships.
The Cyclone men finished with 57 points, edging out No. 23 Texas for second place by two points. Individually, a trio of ISU men brought home All-Big 12 honors, with Ezekiel Rop finishing fourth in 24:13.6, Gable Sieperda ninth in 24:28.5 and Chad Johnson 13th in 24:39.5. All three added to previous All-Big 12 collections, with Rop earning his second career honor, Sieperda his third and Johnson a fourth.
The Cyclone men started out deliberately and together, waiting until the latter stages of the race to push the pace and tempo. The Cyclones made their move just after the halfway point, cutting 44 points from their scoring team to push into second past Texas. The Longhorns briefly returned to second at the second-to-last checkpoint, but Iowa State was able to make some crucial passes in the final exchanges to take second as a team.
Rounding out the scoring team was Kelvin Bungei, who was 17th in 24:45.6 and Titus Winders in 18th in 24:45.8. Titus' younger brother, Silas Winders, had a strong finish to come in 20th in 24:53.4.
