COLUMBIA, Missouri – The Iowa State women's cross country team battled to a fourth place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships Midwest Regional Friday at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course. The Cyclones finished with 115 team points, finishing 27 points back of Northwestern for the second team automatic qualifying spot for next week's NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Should the Cyclones not earn a bid to Stillwater as a team, they are at least guaranteed of individual representation via Dana Feyen, who topped the Cyclone squad in fifth place with a time of 20:13.0. She was closely followed by Madelynn Hill in seventh in 20:18.9, as she joined Feyen in earning All-Region honors for a second-straight season. They were joined on the All-Region podium by Brenna Cohoon, who got her first career All-Region nod with a 24th place finish in 20:44.2.
With a lone breakaway runner ahead of the pack, Feyen and Hill settled into the chase group, which eventually caught the leader at the 4,000m mark. A group of 10 were together at the 5K mark when Illinois' Olivia Howell made her move for the win. Feyen did her best to counter the move, but was unable to stick with the eventual winner.
Janette Schraft bounced back from a couple challenging races to bring home a 26th place finish, just missing out on the All-Region podium by just over a second in 20:45.6.
Iowa State's final scorer was freshman Ashlyn Keeney, who once again showed her incredible ability to finish races, going from 90th at the 4K marker and moving up 37 spots in the final 2K to take 53rd in 21:11.0. Keeney's 3:21.6 final 1,000m was the seventh-fastest in the field, the only six faster coming from the top-six individual finishers.
Kiki Connell took 82nd in 21:37.4 and freshman Halle Mestery rounded out ISU's squad in 115th with a 21:54.2.
In addition, the NCAA Midwest Regional serves as the competition for the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series, with the Cyclones' fourth-place effort bettering the Hawkeyes' 14th place running to give Iowa State an additional two points and a 9-0 lead heading into the men's cross country competition later today.
