AMES, Iowa – Iowa State kicked off its home slate with the first day of the ISU Holiday Invitational. The day was marked with two all-time top performances and four first-place finishes.
Cam Jones put himself in the record books with his first-place finish in the weight throw of 66-3 (20.19m). The finish is the fourth-best in Iowa State history.
Freshmen Kailynn Gubbels (2:23.21) and Ava Cinnamo (2:23.70) took the top two spots in the 800-meter run to close out the pentathlon. Gubbels finish put her overall pentathlon total to 3,575 points to now rank at No. 7 on the Iowa State all-time performance list.
Four throwers, Zach Verzani, Garret Wagner, Blake Veenstra and Micah Walker, also highlighted the weight throw as they threw for personal records. Verzani's new mark of 58-3 (17.75m) tops his previous best by over eight feet.
Rebecca Manteuffel competed unattached and won the weight throw while Emily March recorded a new personal best of 60-4 ¾ (18.41m) for second.
Jack Vetsch picked up a shot put personal record and the event win as he competed in the heptathlon. Vetsch threw 43-2 ¼ (13.16m) for 677 points.
Cinnamo also impressed with a first-place finish in the pentathlon long jump. Her jump of 18-8 (5.69m) added 756 points to her total. Fellow freshman Kailynn Gubbels finished third with a jump of 17-11 ¾ (5.48m) and sophomore Kiersten Fisher notched fourth with 17-9 ½ (5.42m).
The ISU Holiday Invitational continues tomorrow with running events beginning at 11 a.m. and field events at 1 p.m.
