FORT WORTH, Texas – Iowa State (17-9, 4-9 Big 12) snapped a four-game skid in exciting fashion with a 54-51 victory over TCU (16-7, 5-6 Big 12) Tuesday night in Fort Worth. It marks the Cyclones' eighth Quad-1 win of the season, tied for the second-most in the nation.
Izaiah Brockington turned in his 10th 20-point performance of the season to go along with seven rebounds, three steals and two assists while Tyrese Hunter added 15 points. All nine of Gabe Kalscheur's points came in the second half, including a key fadeaway jumper with 2:13 to go which gave ISU the lead for good.
Eddie Lampkin and Emanuel Miller led the Horned Frogs in scoring with 16 and 14, respectively. Iowa State held Mike Miles, TCU's leading scorer this season averaging 15.4 per game, to just three points.
Hunter scored ISU's first four points, but TCU's 3-of-4 start from beyond the arc – paired with a 3-of-12 start from the field for Iowa State – allowed the Horned Frogs to lead 13-8 at the under-12 media timeout.
Hunter and Brockington combined for 15 of Iowa State's first 18 points in the contest as the Cyclones pulled within 19-18 at the final media timeout of the first half. Out of the timeout, a steal and a breakaway right-hand slam from Brockington gave ISU its first lead (20-19) since the 15:45 mark in the opening frame.
Both squads shot 31 percent in the first half, but TCU owned a 24-22 advantage at the break. Iowa State was held without a three-pointer in the first 20 minutes but made a concerted effort to get to the rim and outscored the Horned Frogs in the paint, 14-2.
The largest lead of the game for either side was TCU's 37-31 advantage with 13:36 remaining in the game, but a 3-of-3 shooting stretch for ISU – including triples from Caleb Grill and Hunter – tied the game 39-39 at the under-12.
A string of five-consecutive points from Kalscheur gave Iowa State a 45-43 lead heading into the under-eight media timeout. After shooting 0-for-5 from deep in the first half, the Cyclones cashed in five triples in the final frame, perhaps none more important than Brockington's make out of the under-four timeout.
Kalscheur's biggest basket of the game came when he drained a fadeaway jumper from the elbow as the shot clock expired to give Iowa State a three-point lead with just over two minutes remaining. Aljaž Kunc made two free throws with one second left to preserve a 54-51 victory for the Cyclones.
