SOUTH BEND, Indiana – Iowa State wrapped up its weekend track and field competitions at the Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame and the Husker Invitational on Saturday. At Notre Dame, the Cyclone men's middle distance squad had another strong day, with a collection of fast times led by Alex Lomong in the 800-meter run.
Lomong made a big move towards heading to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with his performance on Saturday at Notre Dame. Lomong battled well against a strong field and came home fourth on the day in a season-best 1:48.43, dropping eight-tenths off what he ran at Arkansas last weekend, and the fastest indoor 800 of his career. His performance also moved him up to No. 6 in ISU history in the event and (at the time of publication) No. 10 in NCAA Division I this season in the event.
Frank Hayes also had a strong effort in the 800m, finishing seventh on the day in a season-best 1:48.86, taking 0.13 seconds off his effort at the Cyclone Open two weeks ago. His run, his fastest indoor 800m since February 2019, moved him to No. 9 in ISU indoor 800 meter history and (at the time of publication) ranks him tied for 16th in NCAA Division I on the season.
In the men's invitational mile, Wesley Kiptoo bounced back from an off-day at the Millrose Games last weekend to post a personal best 4:01.02 and finish in fourth place, while Nehemia Too was right behind him in fifth place, also recording a personal best 4:01.32.
Husker Invitational
The Cyclone day at the Devaney Center at Nebraska saw Bria Barnes put up another strong run in the 200-meter dash, just missing out on her indoor collegiate best to finish 13th in 25.17.
In the men's shot put Jack Vetsch put up some strong reps for future multi-event performances, finishing with a personal best 42-7 (12.98m). His other legal throw of the day, a 42-2 1/4 (12.93m) was also better than his previous best heading into the weekend.
