Cyclones Fall Short Against UCF

FULLERTON, CALIF. – Iowa State (14-8, 0-0 Big 12) was unable to overcome an early deficit as it fell, 7-5, to UCF (19-7, 0-0 AAC) Saturday afternoon in Fullerton, Calif.
Angelina Allen (3-of-4) registered her fifth multi-hit outing in the last seven games while Kaylee Pond logged her first-career home run. All five of Iowa State's RBIs came from the batters five through nine in the Cyclone lineup.
Ellie Spelhaug (4-6) had early troubles, allowing five runs in the first two frames, but eventually settled in and struck out five in her 3.1-inning start. Karlie Charles entered in relief in the fourth inning and fanned five while allowing a run on three hits.
UCF got off to a hot start, using a two-run home run and an RBI single to plate three runs in the bottom of the first. Iowa State would get one back in the top of the second, however, when Skyler Ramos put the ball in play with runners on the corners to bring home Pond.
The Knights crossed two runs in the second inning to increase their lead to 5-1, but a pair of bases-loaded walks for Iowa State in the top of the third trimmed it back to 5-3.
The Cyclones threatened in the fourth with back-to-back singles to begin the inning, but eventually left runners stranded on the corners. Iowa State left 10 runners on base in the loss. UCF would add a run to its lead in the bottom half of the frame to make the score, 6-3.
In the top of the sixth inning, a Kasey Simpson RBI single brought ISU back to within one at 6-5, but UCF quickly regained a two-run advantage with a solo homer in the bottom half of the frame.
The Cyclones were unable to get a rally going in the seventh as they fell to the Knights, 7-5.
