Iowa State Drops Series Finale to BYU

PROVO, Utah – Iowa State (19-13, 0-0 Big 12) dropped the series finale, 11-7, to BYU (22-7, 0-0 WCC) Saturday afternoon at Gail Miller Field. The Cyclones tallied 12 hits in the game but stranded nine runners on base in the loss.
Three Cyclones logged a multi-hit game, highlighted by Milaysia Ochoa's 3-for-3, two-run day at the plate. Alesia Ranches (2-of-3, 2B, 2 RBI) and Sarah Tyree (2-of-4, 2B, 2 RBI) also posted noteworthy performances.
Karlie Charles was given the starting nod in the circle, but it was Ellie Spelhaug (5-8) who suffered the loss.
BYU started fast, using three hits to cross three runs in the opening frame. The Cougars added one run in both the third and fourth innings before Mikayla Ramos got the Cyclones on the board in the fifth with an RBI double through the left side. She eventually came home on a passed ball to pull ISU within 5-2 of BYU.
After a Cougar pitching change, the Cyclones continued their big fifth inning with two, two-RBI doubles from Ranches and Tyree to jump in front, 6-5. A four-run Cougar outburst allowed BYU to retake the lead in the bottom half of the inning, however.
Ochoa brought Iowa State back within two when she raced home from second on a wild pitch in the sixth inning, but BYU added two more in the bottom half of the frame to put the game back out of reach. Iowa State was unable to rally in the seventh as the Cyclones fell, 11-7, in the series finale.
