AMES, Iowa – There was truly no place like home for Iowa State volleyball on Saturday, as the Cyclones finished their Spring Tournament at Hilton Coliseum with a 3-0 record, picking up a trio of victories over in-state foes.
The Cyclones started the day sweeping Drake 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 15-13), before taking down UNI 2-1 (25-17, 25-13, 13-15) and finishing the day with a 2-1 (25-13, 15-25, 15-11) win over Iowa.
Across the three matches, Iowa State was led by Solei Thomas, who combined for 24 kills across the day. Eleanor Holthaus and Annie Hatch each had 19 kills, with Mariah Mitchell joining them in double figures with 12. At the net, Jordan Hopp led ISU with six blocks (one solo, five assists), while Thomas had five blocks (all assists).
Match 1: Iowa State def. Drake 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 15-13)
A strong serving run from Addi Heidemann helped put ISU in front 9-7. The Bulldogs hung tough, but ISU was able to eventually pull away, with Alexis Engelbrecht posting ISU's first ace of the day to make it 17-13. Solei Thomas recorded back-to-back kills and combined with Abby Greiman for a block to make it 20-14. Thomas led ISU with six kills and two blocks in the first, as Drake fired wide to give ISU the first 25-17.
Drake bounce back with the first three points of the second set, and while ISU was able to tie it three times, the Bulldogs were able to hang tough and get ahead again by three at 10-7. An Annie Hatch kill and ace gave ISU its first lead at 15-14, but Drake was able to move back ahead and eventually by three at 22-19. ISU battled back with a pair of blocks and a Brooke Stonestreet ace to tie it 23-23. UNI missed its chance to convert a set point, but ISU did not as Thomas killed off the block at 26-24.
The third set saw Thomas put down two kills to put ISU ahead early at 4-2, but the Bulldogs fired consecutive aces to move ahead 6-4. The Cyclones moved ahead again at 10-9 and got some breathing room after back-to-back Thomas kills made it 13-11 Cyclones, which was enough from there as ISU wrapped it up on a Drake attack error at 15-13.
Match 2: Iowa State def. UNI 2-1 (25-17, 25-13, 13-15)
The Cyclones were able to take advantage of some Panther errors early to build up a 6-3 advantage, with ISU only getting two points on kills to start. UNI closed it to 9-8 ISU, but Iowa State got a strong serving run from Addi Heidemann (which included two aces) to help restore order at 15-10. After resting for the first match, Eleanor Holthaus made her presence known with six first set kills to lead the Cyclones. ISU wrapped up the set when Holthaus killed from the back row at 25-17.
After not recording any blocks in the first set, the Cyclone front row got to work with three blocks in the set. Jaden Newsome put up a 4-0 run behind the service line to put the set out of UNI's reach early, making it 11-5 Iowa State. After resting for set one against the Panthers, Annie Hatch came in and delivered, recording four kills and two blocks in the set. Thomas got her third kill of the set with a cross-court shot to give it to the Cyclones 25-13.
UNI claimed the first three points of the set, but consecutive kills from Holthaus knotted it at 5-5. The Cyclone offense struggled to convert chances, getting down by as many as six points and not being able to turn it around, with UNI claiming the third 15-13.
Match 3: Iowa State def. Iowa 2-1 (25-13, 15-25, 15-11)
The Iowa State offense came out clicking, getting six kills and a Paula Krześlak ace to get up to a 10-5 advantage. The Cyclones continued to pile it on, with Newsome firing an ace to make it 17-8, and to double figures at 19-9 on a kill from Holthaus. The Cyclone pin hitters did good work in the set, with Holthaus leading the way with four kills and Mariah Mitchell contributing three. Iowa State finished off the first set when Kelsey Perry killed at 25-13.
The Hawkeyes battled back to start the second set with a 6-0 advantage. The deficit became seven at 8-1 before the Cyclone fightback began, with Jordan Hopp contributing to back-to-back blocks to help bring it within two at 10-8. However, Iowa was able to rebuild and take the lead to eight at 17-9 when Hatch fired one wide. The ISU offense struggled, only recording eight kills in the set as the visitors took it 25-15 to even up the match.
Hopp recorded back-to-back kills to open the third set and give ISU the early edge. Iowa came back to tie it at 5-5, but the Cyclones regained composure and worked ahead 8-5 on an ace by Allie Petry. The Cyclones were able to bring it home from there, with Iowa hitting into the net to give the Cyclones a 15-11 set win.

Iowa State heads to Kansas City for a Spring Tournament co-hosted by UMKC and Kansas State, taking place at UMKC's Swinney Rec Center next Saturday. Competition will begin at 10 a.m., featuring matches against Arkansas, Missouri, Saint Louis and Rockhurst.
