NORMAN, Okla. – Iowa State (21-23, 2-9 Big 12) dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 1 Oklahoma (41-1, 10-1 Big 12) Friday evening at Marita Hynes Field. The Cyclones fell in game one, 6-4, before losing, 9-0, in five innings in the nightcap.
Game One – Iowa State 4, No. 1 Oklahoma 6
Iowa State dropped a tight ballgame, 6-4, to the top-ranked Sooners in the day's first contest.
Milaysia Ochoa doubled once and drove in a pair of runs while Mikayla Ramos finished with an RBI double. Carli Spelhaug scored her 50th run of the season to become just the second Cyclone in school history to score 50 runs twice in their career.
Ellie Spelhaug (7-14) suffered the loss in the circle. Spelhaug tossed three innings before Saya Swain entered and posted three consecutive scoreless frames and allowed only three hits.
Iowa State turned a double play in each of the first two innings, but Oklahoma still managed to plate the game's first run in the bottom of the second.
ISU answered in the next inning when Ramos found the gap in left-center field to cross the tying run before a two-RBI double from Ochoa put the Cyclones in front, 3-1. Iowa State's three-run frame tied for the most runs given up in an inning by Oklahoma this season.
The Sooners would respond in a big way, however, with five runs in the bottom half of the third. Oklahoma loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but Swain forced back-to-back pop-outs to evade any damage.
Kaylee Pond drove in a run with a single to left field to pull ISU back to within two in the sixth inning. Iowa State's third double play of the game helped Swain post another zero in the sixth, but the Cyclones couldn't muster a rally as they fell, 6-4, in the series opener.
Game Two – Iowa State 0, No. 1 Oklahoma 9 (5 Inn.)
Iowa State was unable to get anything going offensively as it fell, 9-0, in five innings in game two.
Kasey Simpson logged Iowa State's only hit of the contest in the third inning.
Ellie Spelhaug (7-15) was the pitcher of record for the Cyclones while Swain and Janessa Jasso also made appearances.
The Sooners started fast with three runs in the first and two runs in the second to take a quick, 5-0, advantage after two innings. Oklahoma would add a run in the third and fourth innings before a two-run home run ended the ballgame in the fifth.
