March Win Highlights Day at Musco Twilight

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State got a victory and some more solid performances in the field events Saturday at the Musco Twilight. Emily March was victorious for ISU in the discus on a day which saw the Cyclone throwers record two personal bests in addition to two season bests. There was also an impressive performance from the continuously improving Sydney Willits in the women's long jump.

In the women's discus, March only had one legal throw on the day, but that was all that she needed, as her season-best first throw of 189-2 (57.67m) was enough to win by 17 feet. The mark also preserves her spot at No. 6 in NCAA Division I on the season in the women's discus. The men's discus saw 2021 Big 12 silver medalist Kevin Sakson take third place with a season-best mark of 179-1 (54.58m).

The hammer throw saw a pair of Cyclones pick up personal bests. Jonathan Gannon fired a personal best 181-11 (55.45m) to take seventh in the men's competition, while freshman Danielle Hoyle finished ninth in the women's even with her new personal best of 164-5 (50.11m).

Sydney Willits had a good all-around series, posting the three best all-conditions jumps of her career en route to taking second in the women's long jump. Her best career wind-legal jump was on her second attempt of the day, seeing her go 20-1 1/2 (6.13m). The wind helped her to a new all-conditions personal best on her final attempt at 20-3 3/4w (6.19m). Willits's wind-legal 20-1 1/2 moved her up to a tie for sixth in ISU outdoor women's long jump history.

On the track, competition was highlighted by another personal best from Joven Nelson in the men's 400-meter hurdles, as he went under 54 seconds for the first time in 53.86 to take fourth place.
