WACO, Texas – It was a total team effort as Iowa State (24-25, 4-11 Big 12) secured the series victory over Baylor (27-21, 5-10 Big 12) with a 6-1 win Sunday afternoon inside Getterman Stadium. The Cyclone bats exploded for 11 hits while the pitchers held the Bears to just two.
Milaysia Ochoa paced the Cyclones with a 3-for-4 day at the plate which included a pair of doubles. Mikayla Ramos was back to her old self as she doubled and homered to finish with three RBIs in the contest. It marked the senior's 14th home run of the season, tied for the third-most in a season in school history.
Angelina Allen (2-of-4, 2 R) also turned in a multi-hit outing while Carli Spelhaug and Alesia Ranches each logged an RBI.
Saya Swain (7-4) earned the win in the circle after allowing only one hit and one run in her four-inning start. Ellie Spelhaug showed quality stuff in a three-inning relief outing, giving up only one hit.
It was a defensive battle early but the bats came alive in the fourth inning when Ochoa laced a double to right field to lead off the frame. The next at-bat, Ranches poked a single through the right side to bring her home, giving ISU a 1-0 lead.
Iowa State manufactured another run in the fifth inning when Kali Gose led off with a pinch-hit single to left. Lea Nelson entered to pinch run and was eventually brought home on a perfectly executed bunt squeeze from Carli Spelhaug. Ramos drove in a second Cyclone run in the frame with a double to extend ISU's advantage to 3-0.
Baylor would get a run back in the bottom half of the fifth to pull within 3-1, but the Cyclones would cross an unconventional run in the sixth on some heads-up base running by Skyler Ramos to stretch their lead back to three. Ramos' two-run shot added some extra insurance in the seventh as Iowa State clinched the series with a 6-1 victory.
