Celebrating 50 Years of Title IX

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
On June 23, 1972, Title IX of the Education Amendments Act was enacted by Congress. Notably absent in this legislation is any reference to sports, so the vast impact of Title IX on the world of athletics has simply been a byproduct of legislation that was developed with educational opportunities for girls and women in mind.
Over time, schools and colleges moved toward compliance which meant more opportunities and benefits were available to girls and women in sports. While dialogue continues to this day about the law's interpretation and enforcement, this 37-word piece of landmark legislation was undeniably a pivotal moment in the history of girls and women in sport.
Beginning next week, Iowa State Athletics debuts its yearlong celebration of the 50th anniversary of Title IX with a profile series on coaches, administrators, and student-athletes highlighting their achievements in promoting women's athletics.
