AMES, Iowa – Iowa State wrestling and head coach Kevin Dresser announced the addition of five newcomers to the 2022 recruiting class, bolstering a group that already ranks No. 2 nationally according to MatScouts. Twin brothers Evan and Jacob Frost, Cam Phetxoumphone, Xavier Bruening and Jacob Cates have all signed with the Cyclones.
"We are excited to close out the class of 2022 with these last five guys," Dresser said. "I really feel like this class will go down as one of the best in Iowa State history. It's a big class but also very talented. The three lightweight guys from Iowa all had very successful senior years. The two big guys will add much-needed depth at heavyweight. I'm excited to watch this class progress."
Evan Frost
Hometown: Metairie, Louisiana
High School: Dowling Catholic
Projected Weight Class: 133 pounds
Originally from Louisiana, Evan joins the Cyclones after wrestling his senior season for Dowling Catholic where he posted a 34-1 record and won a state championship at 132 pounds. Frost is a junior freestyle champion at 132 pounds and also won three state titles at Holy Cross High School in Louisiana. Evan is the No. 206 rated overall prospect in the country according to MatScouts.
Jacob Frost
Hometown: Metairie, Louisiana
High School: Dowling Catholic
Projected Weight Class: 141 pounds
Jacob will join his twin brother Evan in the Cardinal & Gold after also spending his senior season at Dowling Catholic where he was a state runner-up in the 138-pound weight class with a 32-2 record. He won three state titles at Holy Cross High School in Louisiana and was a junior freestyle champion. Jacob is rated as the No. 224 overall prospect in the nation according to MatScouts.
Cam Phetxoumphone
Hometown: Webster City, Iowa
High School: Webster City
Projected Weight Class: 125 pounds
Phetxoumphone joins Iowa State after a stand-out high school career at Webster City where he posted a four-year record of 158-8 and won a pair of Class 2A state titles (2020, 2021). Phetxoumphone –pronounced pet-sum-pawn – was a four-time state medalist and three-time finalist for the Lynx. Phetxoumphone was also a two-time Under-16/Cadet All-American (2018, 2019) and won a Junior folkstyle national title in 2021.
Xavier Bruening
Hometown: Burlingame, Calif.
High School: Burlingame
Projected Weight Class: Heavyweight
Bruening joins the Cyclones after posting a 14-4 record as a senior for Burlingame High School in California to go along with a quarterfinal appearance in the state tournament. Bruening finished his high school career with a top 20 heavyweight ranking in the state and was named the Daily Journal's Boys Wrestler of the Year. He earned Daily Journal Athlete of the Week honors in May after he won a state title at the California USA Wrestling Freestyle State Championships.
Jacob Cates
Hometown: Corpus Christi, Texas
High School: Richard King
Projected Weight Class: Heavyweight
Jacob Cates joins the Cyclone roster from King High School in Corpus Christi, Texas where he posted a 50-5 record and logged a fifth-place finish as a senior. Cates was named the Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week after pinning all seven of his opponents en route to district and regional titles. Cates was a two-time state qualifier in Texas and was a two-time district champion.
