LARAMIE, Wyo. – Iowa State (1-2) dropped a tight contest by a score of 3-2 to Wichita State (2-1) 25-21, 21-25, 27-25, 23-25, 10-15. Four Cyclones hit 10 or more kills in the five-setter.
Eleanor Hotlhaus tallied one kill shy of 20 while she hit her 10th early on in the second set. Mariah Mitchell got her 10th in the third, ending with 16. Alexis Engelbrecht and Maya Duckworth both got their 10th in the fifth set.
Kate Shannon got in on the action to match her career-high three aces while Jaden Newsome tallied two shy of her career high total assists with 52. Newsome also collected 10 digs, her second game this season in double digits for the setter.
SET ONE
Mitchell entered the frame with a career total of 599 kills and fired off her 600th early in the set for the Cyclones' first point. As the Shockers led 17-14, Kate Shannon stepped to the serving line to dish out an ace, leading to a 4-0 scoring run to five the Cyclones the advantage 18-17. A solo block by Jaden Newsome gave Iowa State the set-winning point at 25-21.
SET TWO
Two consecutive kills by Jordan Hopp kept Iowa State in it as Wichita State led 6-4. Holthaus fired off two kills and Newsome and Alexis Engelbrecht combined for a block to tie it 7-7. The Cyclones and Shockers traded points as the lead kept within two points for either team before a 3-0 Shockers' scoring run forced an ISU timeout at 15-12. Wichita State hit at .391 in the set and eventually knotted the match 1-1 by a score of 25-21.
SET THREE
The tight action proved consistent as 13 ties were seen in the frame. Shannon's third ace of the match tied both her career high and the score at 11-11. Mitchell tallied her 10th kill in the third, her second-straight game hitting in double digits. After the Cyclones got down by as much as four, ISU battled back to come within one at 23-22 after a Newsome ace. Maya Duckworth slammed down a kill to win the set and retake the lead, 27-25.
SET FOUR
The Shockers ran out to an early 6-0 lead before the Cyclones took the next two points on a block and a kill. Wichita State controlled the lead before the Cyclones went on a 3-0 scoring run capped with a block by freshman Maya Duckworth and Kelsey Perry to put the score at 15-14 Wichita State. Brooke Stonestreet nailed down an ace followed by a Holthaus kill to tie it at 20. Wichita State went on to force a fifth, taking the set on a kill by Natalie Foster.
SET FIVE
In the Cyclones' first five-setter of the season, the back-and-forth action continued. Teams traded points before Wichita State got out to a lead of 8-4. From there, the Shockers controlled their lead to take the win away from Iowa State by a score of 15-10.

Next weekend, the Cyclones continue their road stint with the Tiger Challenge hosted by LSU to contend against Penn State, LSU and Troy.
