COLUMBIA, Missouri – The returnees shined for the No. 26 Iowa State women at the Mizzou XC Opener, with a trio of 2021 All-Big 12 finishers leading the Cyclone women to a 1-2-3 finish and a team title. Dana Feyen picked up her first career individual cross country victory, taking first place in a 5K time of 17:24.2 with Madelynn Hill second in 17:26.3 and Janette Schraft third in 17:43.4.
The ISU women took six of the top seven spots overall to claim the team title with 17 points. The Cyclones showed their depth via a fifth-place finish from Kiki Connell (18:00.5), sixth by Brenna Cohoon (18:01.5) and seventh for Taylor Briggs (18:09.0).
The Cyclone quartet of Feyen, Hill, Shraft and Cohoon were the top-four at each of the first two checkpoints, and had company with a trio Oklahoma Sooners joining them in the lead pack. The pack broke up during the third kilometer, with the eventual top three putting nine seconds on the remainder of the lead pack.
Feyen and Hill continued to inch ahead and made it a two-woman race for the victory, with Feyen closing in 3:22.2 in the final kilometer to win by just over two seconds. The Cyclones showed their strength across the race with four runners in the race closing the final kilometer in under 3:30, all four of them Cyclones in Feyen, Hill (3:22.8), Connell (3:25.8, moving up three spots in the last 1,000m) and freshman Ashlyn Keeney (3:28.8, moving up 11 spots in the final 1,000m).
