COLUMBIA, Missouri – No. 10 Iowa State opened its season with a strong performance at the Mizzou XC Opener, claiming 13 of the top-16 spots en route to the team title. Ezekiel Rop led the Cyclone effort, picking up his first individual victory as a Cyclone with a 6K time of 17:54.9.
The top-3 finishers for Iowa State were all familiar faces, with Gable Sieperda taking third in 18:09.1 and Chad Johnson fourth in 18:10.5. The Cyclones' next three across the line were all newcomers, with transfers Titus Winders (fifth, 18:14.6) and Silas Winders (sixth, 18:14.8) being joined by freshman Seth Clevenger (seventh, 18:15.0).
Clevenger and his fellow freshmen Alex McKane and Ryan Watts took out the first 2,000 meters in 6:07. The veterans began to make their way up the Cyclone pack at the halfway point, with Sieperda, Rop Nehemia Too and Kelvin Bungei all entering the top five at the 3K.
Rop and Sieperda both went sub-3 minutes for the fifth kilometer to move ahead from the rest of the field. Rop then motored home for the victory with a final kilometer of 2:49.9 to win by over 10 seconds and be the only guy in the field under 18 minutes.
