BATON ROUGE, La. – Iowa State (1-4) lost on a sweep by LSU (3-2) 18-25, 18-25, 13-25. Alexis Engelbrecht led the Iowa State attack with 10 kills to match her career high.
Engelbrecht was stellar both offensively and in defending with four blocks. The middle blocker closed the night hitting .348.
The Cyclones struggled offensively, registering a .046 hitting percentage with 28 team kills on 108 attempts through three sets.
SET ONE
Iowa State returned to action with a kill by Jordan Hopp and Mariah Mitchell to lead 2-0 before LSU took a scoring run to lead by as much as six. ISU fired back with a block by Engelbrecht and Hopp followed by an Engelbrecht kill. Hopp converted her third kill on just five attempts to put the Cyclones within five of the Tigers. Two kills by Solei Thomas ensued to lead to an LSU attack error as Iowa State trimmed down the deficit to two at 19-17. The Tigers slammed down four kills and an ace to end the first ahead 25-18.
SET TWO
The Iowa State blockers came out to build the Cyclone lead to as many as five early in the second. A stuff by Mitchell and Engelbrecht sent the score to 9-4 in Iowa State's favor. LSU then took control of their attack to bring the lead back to the Tigers. Hopp continued her attacking dominance, delivering her fifth kill of the match on eight swings at .500 to bring the Cyclones back within three at 16-13. Morgan Brandt checked in to made her Cyclone debut at setter as the Tigers led 18-13. Another block by Engelbrecht and Mitchell kept Iowa State in it as LSU led by five. The Tigers ultimately took the set by an identical score of the first frame.
SET THREE
LSU hit their stride in the third and controlled through the duration. Engelbrecht slammed down four kills in the frame to solidify her second game of the season in double figures. Freshman Kiersten Schmitt followed that up with recording her first career kill and the sixth point of the third set. Iowa State attack errors led to a Cyclone hitting percentage of .000 as LSU hit .250 in the frame. The Tigers sealed the sweep on a kill by LSU's Hannah Jacobs.
