AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (3-4) downed Drake (5-2) by a score of 3-1 (25-13, 25-27, 25-19, 26-24) to open the Cardinal and Gold Challenge. Setter Jaden Newsome dominated the night as she hit .462 with nine kills on only 13 attempts.
Newsome also brought in 37 assists and 10 digs as she came one kill shy of a triple-double. Nine kills matches the senior's career high and takes her season total to 31.
Eleanor Holthaus led the team in kills with 14 while Maya Duckworth joined Newsome in nearly totaling double-digit kills with nine. Brooke Stonestreet hit in the double digits as she matched her career high with 21 digs.
SET ONE
Kiersten Schmitt got her first career start as Iowa State led to begin the first frame. The Cyclones and Bulldogs kept it even until a kill by Newsome sparked a 4-0 scoring run featuring back-to-back kills by Holthaus. The Cyclones continued to stretch their lead as they ended with a hitting percentage of .452 in the frame. Drake was held to 13 points in the set to notch back-to-back games of holding an opponent to 15 points or less.
SET TWO
Drake answered, running ahead by as much as six points behind Drake's Taylor Oberpriller hitting .700 in the frame. The Cyclone battled back to make the score 23-20 but the Bulldogs hit a kill to make it to set point. A kill by Duckworth kept the set going while the Cyclones fought off another set point with a successful challenge to make it 24-23. Iowa State kept on as the set saw four additional set points until an Iowa State attack error gave the decisive point to Drake. Duckworth led the set with four kills while Newsome sent over three.
SET THREE
Drake got off to a 5-0 lead before Bulldog attack errors stopped their run. Freshman Kelsey Perry and Schmitt dropped in three kills collectively to bring Iowa State back in it. Newsome remained dominant as she tallied an additional three kills, including the set winner to bring the lead back to the Cyclones.
SET FOUR
The set saw even action early on as either team's lead stuck within three. Three straight Cyclone points then put the Cyclones up 15-10 on an Alexis Engelbrecht kill. Engelbrecht continued her offensive attack, striking two more to total eight for the middle blocker. Drake tied things back up at 20-20 on an Oberpriller kill, but the Cyclones pushed on to win the set 26-24 and the match 3-1.

The Cyclones are back in action at Hilton this Friday to meet Iowa in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. The match begins at 6:30 p.m.
