AMES, Iowa - Iowa State completed the seventh season under the direction of head coach Matt Campbell. The Cyclones finished 4-8 overall with six of the losses coming by one score.
KEY STORYLINES
- Eleven of the Cyclones' 12 opponents reached the 2022 postseason.
- Iowa State beat Iowa for the first time since the 2014 season, snapping a six-game streak to the Hawkeyes ... the win was also ISU's first at Kinnick Stadium since 2014.
- ISU's defense put together one of the best seasons in school history, leading the Big 12 in total defense (285.6 ypg), rushing defense (107.3), passing defense (178.2) and scoring defense (20.2 points) ... ISU is just the third school in Big 12 Conference history to lead the league in all four defensive categories.
- Iowa State's defensive unit owns a streak of 15 consecutive games holding its opponents to fewer than 400 yards of total offense, the second-longest streak nationally.
- The ISU defense allowed just 7.7 points (6th nationally) and 114.5 yards (T-1st) in the second half of games this season.
- Wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson concluded one of the best careers of any Cyclone ... Hutchinson was an Associated Press First Team All-American, becoming the 12th different ISU player to earn All-America honors under Campbell ... he was also one of three Biletnikoff Award finalists ... Hutchinson capped his Cyclone career by breaking his own single-season school record with 107 receptions, as well as the career record with 254 catches ... he also set the career mark with 13 100-yard games.
- Hutchinson led the nation in receptions per game (8.9), making at least eight catches in 11 of 12 games ... he was also among the top-10 nationally in receiving yards (8th, 1,171) and receiving yards per game (7th, 97.6).
- Defensive end Will McDonald tied the Big 12 career sack record with 34.0.
- This marked the seventh season of the Matt Campbell era ... his .523 winning percentage is the second-best by a Cyclone coach since the Big Six was formed in 1928 ... he's got 46 wins, behind only Dan McCarney (56).
JOHNSONÂ ISU'SÂ IRONMAN
- Defensive back Anthony Johnson Jr. made 54 career starts, breaking the school record against Oklahoma and breaking Colt McCoy's (Texas, 2005-09) Big 12 record in his final game.
