AMES, Iowa – No. 25 Iowa State (13-3, 4-1 Big 12) took the straight-set victory (25-21, 25-23, 25-17) over Texas Tech (8-10, 1-5 Big 12) Friday night to cement ISU's eighth sweep of the season. Iowa State hit over .300 for the sixth time in 2023, outhitting the Red Raiders .372-.243.
Nayeli Gonzalez extended her double-figure kill streak to four matches leading all players with 15 at a dominant clip of .429. Jordan Hopp remained her efficient self, hitting eight kills without an error at .571 while Pam McCune notched eight at .500. Hopp passed 100 kills on the season, now totaling 105.
Brooke Stonestreet led the Cyclone defense with her fifth 20-plus dig match this season, totaling 21 through the three sets. It is Stonestreet's 16th-career match with 20 or more.
Morgan Brandt tallied 42 assists to bring her career total to 1,153 and move up a spot to now rank 16th in Iowa State history. The setter again showed her versatility with three kills (.333 hitting), two aces, six digs and a block.
SET ONE
Texas Tech took the first three points before Gonzalez put down the kill and Annie Hatch served up the ace. Brandt slammed down a kill as it came across the net to tie up the first at 7. Iowa State went on to take the lead (13-10) on a 4-0 run, including two Brandt aces. ISU held the lead from there, winning the set 25-21 while hitting at .355.
SET TWO
Hopp shined notching four kills to start the set up 9-6. With the Cyclones up 14-10 Texas Tech fought back to tie things at 15, but back-to-back Maya Duckworth kills put the lead back in ISU's hands at 18-16. The set then saw additional ties at 20s, 21s and 22s, but Iowa State pushed forward taking the set 25-23 on a Lilly Wachholz kill.
SET THREE
Gonzalez put Iowa State's first three points on the board with kills as ISU began ahead 3-2. Tech then got their first set lead at 10-9 on a successful challenge. Two kills by Hopp, still without an error, and another by Gonzalez then gave Iowa State the lead for good. ISU hit at .395 for the second-consecutive set to seal the sweep.
NEXT UP
ISU now hits the road, meeting K-State next Wednesday, Oct. 11 followed by a series with BYU Oct. 19 and 20.
