11.02.2023 | Men's Basketball
The 2023-24 NBA season is one week in, and Cyclones are already making a difference across the league. Three former Iowa Staters played in the first nine days of action.
Iowa State has two former players starting at point guard this season for their respective squads, as both Tyrese Haliburton and Talen Horton-Tucker, members of the same recruiting class, have been trusted to lead their teams.
Tyrese Haliburton - #0, Indiana Pacers (2-2)
After an offseason that saw Haliburton get rewarded for his first All-Star appearance, the fourth-year pro is continuing his upward trajectory, as he leads the NBA in assists per game and holds two of the top four assists per game performances. Haliburton missed game four at Boston.

Haliburton recorded a double-double (20 points, 11 assists) in the season-opening win over Washington and nearly tallied a triple-double in the second game against Niang's Cavs. Haliburton's 21 points, 13 assists and eight boards lifted Indiana to a 2-0 start. Tyrese recorded his third straight double-double in a loss to the Bulls, matching his season-best assist mark with 13.

Talen Horton-Tucker - #5, Utah Jazz (2-3)
As mentioned, Horton-Tucker has begun the year as the starting point guard for the Utah Jazz. Across four games of action, THT has recorded two double-digit scoring outings, including a season-best 16 points against last year's champion Denver Nuggets.
Horton-Tucker got the scoring started for the Jazz this season, knocking in the team's first points of the 2023-24 campaign. He recorded a near double-double in the team's win over the Clippers, tallying 10 points and eight assists. THT leads the team in assists, averaging 5.6Â a game.

Niang has gotten off to a bit of a slow start with the Cavaliers after signing with Cleveland in the offseason. The eight-year vet and the Cavs dropped three of their first four contests, including one to Haliburton and the Pacers, before defeating the Knicks last night. Niang will get a chance at payback as Cleveland heads to Indiana this week.
Georges posted his first double-figure scoring output on Halloween night, pouring in 11 points off the bench - including three three-pointers - against the Knicks. The Cavs played the Knicks again on Nov. 1 and Niang won the Cavs' post-game chain.
With Niang being new to the team, the Cavs sat him down and asked him to explain his nickname: The Mini Van.
