AMES, Iowa – Iowa State tied for the Big 12-high by placing nine football players in the 2023 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society, announced today by the NFF.
Seniors Blake Clark, Beau Coberley, Connor Guess, Kendell Jackson, Anthony Johnson Jr., Drake Nettles, Colby Reeder, Jared Rus and O'Rien Vance earned membership this year for the Cyclones.
To make the team, student-athletes must have completed their eligibility and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.2 throughout their career.
The group played a significant role on the field for the Cyclones in their careers.
Clark, a West Des Moines, Iowa, native, played in 50 games in his career. His action came primarily on special teams as the holder on field goals and PATs.
Coberley, a Nevada, Iowa, native, was another special teamer for the Cyclones. He caught two passes for the Cyclones as a senior.
Guess, a Van Meter, Iowa, native, served as the Cyclones' long snapper on field goals and PATs the last three seasons, while adding punt team duties as a senior for ISU in 2022. He played in 37 career games.
Jackson, a Des Moines native, had his best season as a Cyclone in 2022, finishing with 22 tackles, including 2.0 for a loss. Jackson recovered a fumble in ISU's win at Iowa.
Johnson Jr., a St. Petersburg, Florida, native, earned All-Big 12 honors four times in his career, including second-team accolades from the league's coaches in 2022 after switching from cornerback to safety. He broke the Iowa State and Big 12 record with 54 career starts and finished his Cyclone tenure with 243 tackles and two interceptions.
Council Bluffs, Iowa native Nettles connected on all five of his extra point attempts in 2022. In 2020, he handled kickoff duties the second half of the season which was highlighted by a pooch kickoff against Oregon in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl that was recovered by the Cyclones.
Reeder, a Hockessin, Delaware, native, played just one season for the Cyclones but his impact was felt on his way to earning All-Big 12 honorable mention honors. He made eight starts and finished with 38 tackles, including 4.5 for a loss. He led the team with two interceptions and also recovered a fumble.
Rus, an Eldridge, Iowa, native, earned All-Big 12 First Team honors in 2021 and followed with All-Big 12 Second Team accolades as a senior in 2022. He played in 39 career games and finished with 14 receptions for 112 yards as a key performer on ISU's power package formations.
Vance, a Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native, was a two-time All-Big 12 honorable mention selection. He finished with 61 tackles as a senior, including a team-high 10.0 tackles for a loss. He played in 57 career games and finished ninth in school history with 32.0 tackles for a loss, while also ranking 10th in school history with 13.5 sacks.
