STILLWATER, Okla. – Iowa State upset No. 3 Oklahoma State, 3-2, in Stillwater on Sunday afternoon, handing the Cowgirls their first Big 12 loss of the season in 11 hard-fought innings.
Iowa State (14-25, 2-10 Big 12) picked up its second-ever win over a No. 3 team in program history, having also defeated No. 3 Texas on April 24 of 2005 in Austin. Oklahoma State (39-4, 8-1 Big 12) dropped just its second game in its last 23 outings as Iowa State handed Cowgirl ace Kelly Maxwell her first loss of the season.
After surrendering a run in the bottom of the first inning, the Cyclones plated a pair of scores in the top of the second thanks to a pair of RBI doubles from Carli Spelhaug and Sarah Tyree. OSU would knot the game at two in the fourth and the game would head all the way to the eleventh inning before another run was scored. Milaysia Ochoa played hero, delivering the game-winning hit, driving in Tyree.
Today was a total team win, as 20 different Cyclones took the field for Iowa State. The victory is tied with 2005's squad for the highest-ranked win in program history.
How it Happened
For the first time this series, Oklahoma State got on the board first, tallying a run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Rachel Becker had a leadoff double and was brought home two batters later as Kiley Naomi singled her in. The Cyclones got out of the inning with a brilliant play from Milaysia Ochoa, who caught a fly ball and threw out a runner attempting to go home to earn an inning-ending double play.
The Cyclones responded with some offense of its own in the top of the second, plating a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. Alesia Ranches drew a one-out walk to get a runner on for ISU and was subsequently brought home by a Carli Spelhaug double down the left line. Next up, Sarah Tyree blooped a double into center, which would plate Spelhaug and put the Cyclones up a run.
Two innings later, in the fourth, the Cowgirls would knot the game at two-all. A leadoff double and a walk would put two runners on for Oklahoma State. Morgyn Wynne walked up to the plate and sent a single to right field to plate a run and knot the game at two apiece.
The two teams combined for four hits between the fifth and ninth inning as neither team was able to muster any runs as the game would head to extras.
After seven-straight scoreless innings, the Cyclones broke through in the top of the eleventh. Sarah Tyree started the inning off by drawing a walk and used flyouts from both Camille Marin and Angelica Gonzalez to advance to third. Then, with two outs, Milaysia Ochoa delivered the game-winner, sending a single into left field, which would plate Tyree and give the Cyclones a one-point advantage, 3-2.
In the bottom of the eleventh, Ellie Spelhaug shut the Cowgirls attempt at a rally down. OSU started the inning with a walk, but thanks to a brilliant effort from Kasey Simpson, the Cyclones turned two to be one out away. Spelhaug forced the final batter into a groundout as ISU walked away with an upset victory over the third-ranked Cowgirls.
