AMES, Iowa – On a day where eight Iowa State seniors were honored, the Iowa State Cyclones (21-28, 4-11 Big 12) toppled the No. 18 Baylor Bears (36-15, 5-10 Big 12) 6-5 on Sunday to clinch its first Big 12 series win of 2023.Â
The Cyclones would use a five-run fourth inning, including four of those runs coming with two outs, to complete the comeback victory and record their third ranked win of the season.Â
Camille Marin would be the hero of the day as she swatted a three-run homer, the first of her career, over the right-field wall to cap off the fourth inning and give the Cyclones the lead for good.Â
On a day that saw 11 runs cross the plate between the two teams, two-out hitting would be the story as both Baylor and Iowa State would plate multiple two-out runs. But Iowa State proved more clutch in this one as they would pick up four two-out runs compared to Baylor's two.Â
How it Happened
Mother Nature played a huge role in Sunday's game today as ISU was able to manufacture its first run of the game on a double by Carli Spelhaug that fell between the center and left fielders and an infield pop-up off the bat of Alesia Ranches that was dropped. The Cyclones would take a 1-0 lead as things headed to the third inning.Â
The third inning saw Baylor score its first run of the game to knot things at one. Sydney Collzaos would ground out with the bases loaded to push Baylor's first run across. With that RBI, Collazos would tally an RBI in all three games this weekend.Â
After tossing a scoreless bottom of the third, the Bears would put up a four-spot in the top of the fourth to take a four-run lead. The Bears would use five hits in the inning to propel them to the crooked number, including three with two outs.Â
But the Cyclones would answer Baylor's four-run inning with a five-run inning of their own to take a lead they would never relinquish.Â
Angelina Allen got things started in the fourth by stroking a single to left field, followed by a Sarah Tyree bloop hit to begin a one-out threat. Ranches would push across the first run of the inning as part of a two-hit performance, followed by a Tatum Johnson RBI single and a three-run home run by Camille Marin to cap off the rally.Â
Marin's home run would prove to be the game-winning home run as Ellie Spelhaug would blank the Bears' offense from the fourth inning on to secure the series victory.Â
