AMES, Iowa -Â The Iowa State women's basketball team had another history-making season in 2022-23. For the first time in 22 years, the Cyclones claimed a Big 12 trophy, bringing home the 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship title, which in turn gave ISU its 21st NCAA Women's Basketball Championship bid in program history.
KEY STORYLINES
-The highlight of the season came over those three days in March when the Cyclones took down Baylor, No. 14 Oklahoma and No. 15 Texas in consecutive days in Kansas City to cut down the nets at Municipal Auditorium.
-Iowa State made the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship for the 21st time in program history, all of them coming under head coach Bill Fennelly.
-The 2022-23 Iowa State Cyclones were led by Ashley Joens, who finished her season with many additions to her already extensive trophy and individual honors collection.
-For the third-straight season, Joens was named the winner of the Cheryl Miller Award, given to the nation's top small forward. Joens now owns half the trophies in the award's six-year history.
-In addition, Joens was named Big 12 Player of the Year and was the unanimous selection as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship's Most Outstanding Player. Over the three days in Kansas City, Joens averaged 26.7 points and 11.0 rebounds per game to lead ISU to the title.
-Joens was named a Second Team All-American by the USBWA and a Third Team All-American by the Associated Press. She is the only player in program history to make multiple USBWA All-America teams and joins Angie Welle as the only player in ISU history to make multiple AP All-America squads.
-Joens finished her career with a bevy of career school records, with her 3,060 career points ranking first in Iowa State history, second in Big 12 history and ninth in NCAA Division I Women's Basketball history.
-Teammate Emily Ryan was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team. Ryan ranked second in the Big 12 and ninth in the country with 6.4 assists per game, while she was the Big 12's iron woman, playing a league-best 36.2 minutes per game while the entire game 11 times.
-Lexi Donarski earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention and All-Big 12 Defensive Team. With her second-straight Defensive Team honor in the bank, Donarski became the first player in Iowa State history to earn All-Big 12 Defensive Team more than once.
-Denae Fritz was a member of the Big 12 All-Freshman Team. The Cyclones have had an honoree on the All-Freshman Team four of the last five seasons.
-Head Coach Bill Fennelly claimed his 750th career win during the 2022-23 season, becoming the 27th coach in NCAA Women's Basketball history to reach the plateau and the 13th of that group to get all 750 (now 756) at Division I schools only.
