OKLAHOMA CITY – Iowa State saw its postseason run come to an end on Friday, falling to the tournament's number one team and top-ranked Oklahoma, 9-0 in five shortened innings.
The Cyclones (25-30) weren't able to replicate their Thursday afternoon performance at the plate, as the Sooner pitching staff held the Cyclones to just one hit on the day. No. 1 Oklahoma (50-1) didn't show any rust, having not played in the opening round, as it combined stellar pitching with powerful hitting to earn its 50th win on the season.
Carli Spelhaug notched the lone Cyclone hit on the day, also reaching on a walk. Iowa State only had one other player reach as Alesia Ranches also drew a walk off of starting pitcher Alex Storako.
Saya Swain (5-9) got the start in the circle for the Cyclones, as the junior out of Paris, Texas went for 2.1 innings of work. Ellie Spelhaug also pitched for the Cyclones, a day after tossing a complete game two-hitter against No.15 Baylor.
This was the second straight postseason that the Cyclones took the opening round over Baylor before falling to top-seeded Oklahoma in the semifinals.
How it Happened
The top-ranked team in the country didn't take long to flex its muscles, as the Sooners plated seven runs across the first two innings.
In the first, OU took advantage of a pair of walks and notched three hits to plate three runs. In the second inning, Oklahoma used a three-run Grace Lyons homer as part of its four-run inning to go up 7-0.
The Sooners would add two more runs in the bottom of the third inning as the Big 12 Player of the Year, Jayda Coleman, tanked a 2-run homer over the right field wall to put Oklahoma up 9-0.
Iowa State would be held scoreless by the nation's number one team, as the Sooners took the semifinal game over ISU, 9-0 in five innings.
