Iowa State sophomore punter Tyler Perkins was the Cyclones' primary punter last season as a true freshman. Perkins had a solid rookie campaign, earning freshman All-America honors from The Athletic.
Cyclones.com: Going into fall camp, what is something you learned last season that you can bring to this year's team?
Tyler Perkins: Every rep counts. You have to have the right mindset.
Cyclones.com: Recently you were named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List. What does it mean to you to be getting recognized on a national level?
TP: It's an honor. I have the greatest support system I think I could have with all the coaches, teammates and my family.
Cyclones.com: Do you have a pregame ritual or a routine you do for gameday?
TP: I meditate. Put on music and meditate.
Cyclones.com: You were one of only 13 freshman punters in college football last year and had the fifth-best punt average. Does that experience help your confidence going into year two?
TP: Yeah, absolutely. A lot of learning experiences I had and a lot that I can work and build on.
Cyclones.com: What's an aspect of your game that you've seen grow during summer and fall camps?
TP: Consistency. Just being able to punt consistently. A consistent spiral.
Cyclones.com: Is there a player who you looked up to or modeled your game after? Why?
TP: Someone from a different position. I really looked up to (former Cyclone long snapper) Connor Guess last year and his leadership. Taking leadership qualities away from him.
Cyclones.com: What's a difference you've seen between last year's team and this year's team?
TP: I really think the team comradery is different in a good way. I feel like we are all growing closer together.
Cyclones.com: What made you want to come to Iowa State?
TP: I love Coach Campbell and all the coaches and the staff. The culture here was just different.
Cyclones.com: Do you have any hobbies outside of football?
TP: I like to fish.
