AMES, Iowa – Three former Iowa State men's basketball players have helped lead their country to the second round of the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Tyrese Haliburton (United States), Melvin Ejim (Canada) and George Conditt IV (Puerto Rico) will all play at least two more games in the second round of Group Play, starting on Friday.
The United States and Canada both went 3-0 in Group Play to win their groups, while Puerto Rico went 2-1 to finish second. In the second round of Group Play, Puerto Rico will be in Group I, paired with Serbia, Dominican Republic and Italy. Team USA will be in Group J with Lithuania, Montenegro and Greece. Canada will be in Group L with Spain, Brazil and Latvia. The top two teams in each of the remaining groups will advance to the quarterfinals, which start Tuesday, Sept. 5.
Haliburton came off the bench in all three games for Team USA, averaging 8.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. Ejim averaged 5.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game, while also averaging 1.7 steals per game. He scored 13 points in Canada's win over Lebanon. Conditt IV nearly averaged a double-double with 10.7 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists. He also added four blocked shots. In the opening victory over South Sudan, Conditt IV tallied 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Marial Shayok's South Sudan squad finished 1-2 overall in group play and will play two more games in the 17-32 classification round. Shayok averaged 12 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists, scoring in double figures in all three games.
Ejim is representing Canada for the second time in the FIBA World Cup, while it is the first appearance for Haliburton, Conditt IV and Shayok. Haliburton won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup. Haliburton, Conditt IV and Shayok were all members of Iowa State's 2019 Big 12 Tournament Championship team.
