AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (4-0, 0-0 Big 12) took the victory over Long Island (0-5, 0-0 NEC) in straight sets to move to 4-0 on the season for the first time since 2017 Saturday morning. Iowa State hit just under .300 with a team hitting percentage of .299, while holding LIU to .062. ISU has held each opponent this season under an efficiency of .100.
Iowa State showed a balanced attack as nine recorded a kill. The trio of Annie Hatch, Alexis Engelbrecht and Nayeli Gonzalez led the match as each totaled seven through the sweep. Hatch notched her total on 11 attempts at .545 hitting while Engelbrecht also added three blocks to her stat line.
SET ONE
Scoring opened evenly before Iowa State ran ahead 12-8 on a Morgan Brandt kill to cause a Long Island timeout. The Cyclones remained ahead as Gonzalez notched back-to-back kills making it 16-11. ISU kept it going as Maya Duckworth put down the kill from the backrow to reach 20 points while LIU held 14. Iowa State would go on to take the first set 25-18 on a Jordan Hopp kill.
SET TWO
The Cyclones jumped ahead 10-5 as Brandt tipped over another kill at setter. ISU remained in control as Faith DeRonde became the ninth Cyclone to record a kill at 16-6, going on to tally another to make it 22-8. LIU hit at -.129 through the set as Iowa State went up 2-0 in the match with a set score of 25-12.
SET THREE
Long Island began with the lead while Iowa State clawed back to knot things at 11 and proceed to take the lead 13-11 after five-straight points. A Lilly Wachholz kill brought the Cyclones ahead 20-16, but Long Island did not let up trimming the advantage to one. With the score at 22-20, Annie Hatch checked back in to slam down the kill, her sixth at an efficiency of .500. Another Hatch kill brought ISU to match point before LIU fought it off, but the Cyclones ended it on a Hopp kill to provide for the sweep.
