AMES, Iowa – Iowa State earned its second-straight clean sheet at the Cyclone Soccer Complex on Thursday evening, drawing with the Cincinnati Bearcats, 0-0.
The Cyclones (3-6-5, 1-2-3 Big 12) now have five shutouts this season, with four coming in Big 12 play. Of their six conference matches, ISU has shut out its opponents four times. The Bearcats (6-6-2, 2-4-1 Big 12) earned their first draw of the conference slate, running their total points to seven on the season.
Morgan Furmaniak led the Cyclone attack on the night, as the senior peppered the net, sending four shots toward UC keeper Anna Rexford. Three of Furmaniak's shots were on goal, but none were able to break the stalemate. Lauren McConnell was the lone other Cyclone to notch multiple shots, while both Ella Zimmerman and Ella Ciardullo each had a shot. Zimmerman, Isabella Agrusso and Lauren Hernandez played the entire 90 minutes in the field. Avery Gillahan also played the full 90 in the net, collecting five saves and earning her eighth career clean sheet.
Cincinnati's Megan Smith had a game-high five shots on the night, putting a pair on goal. Claire Rea was just behind Smith, belting four shots toward Gillahan, but to no avail. Cincinnati keeper Anna Rexford earned her third shutout of the season, smothering four shots.
A strong first half gave Cincinnati the shot advantage on the night (16-8), as well as an edge in corner kicks (13-5). ISU had one more save than the Bearcats (5-4), while Cincinnati had one more foul (15-14). Each team had three yellow cards assessed.
How it Happened
Cincinnati came out of the gates strong, owning the first 20 minutes of play and really controlling the match. The Bearcats fired off six shots in the first 15 minutes, forcing Gillahan to make a pair of saves.
After surviving Cincinnati's frantic attack to start the match, Iowa State got its first opportunity in the 27th minute, as a Furmaniak shot to the bottom left of the net required a Rexford save.
As the half winded down, ISU found itself with a good run, and a blocked Lauren McConnell shot would lead to a corner kick at the top right of the pitch. A ball was perfectly sent in, falling amongst a crowd of jerseys. After a couple of feet made contact with the ball, Sophia Thomas buried it in the back of the net. However, an ISU offsides call wiped away a go-ahead goal.
That McConnell blocked shot in the 40th minute would be the last of the half for either side as both teams went into the break tied at zero. UC held a 10-2 shot advantage in the first half with a 5-2 corner edge. The Cyclones had four saves to Cincinnati's one.
Coach Matt Fannon's halftime speech resonated with the team, as the Cyclones came out in the second half looking like a different team. Unlike the first half, ISU was able to wrangle control of the momentum early.
Three quick shots in the first eight minutes showed a new sense of aggression for the Cyclones, forcing two more Rexford saves. One of those shots was a penalty kick, taken by Furmaniak, that Rexford was able to read and preserve a clean sheet. The PK came as a result of a handball in the box.
After those early three shots, the match went on for 20 minutes without another attempt before it picked back up in the 77th minute. The Bearcats held a 5-2 shot advantage over the last 13 minutes of play but were unable to break the tie.
Each team picked up a pair of yellow cards in the second stanza, in addition to one on each side from the first half. Injuries were also a problem in the second half, as multiple players went down, forcing stoppages. For ISU, Yira Yoggerst, Furmaniak, McConnell and Adelaide Wolfe all had to leave the field for injury. For Cincinnati, Faith Broering had to check out, too, for a head injury.
Fannon's Thoughts
"I think we came out a bit slowly in the first half. We ended up chasing early in the game because of it. Once we started dominating in the second half, we had to find a way to get a goal. We had two great opportunities, and it feels a bit disappointing not coming out with three points tonight."
