FORT WORTH, Texas – Iowa State (9-12, 3-6 Big 12) took No. 18 TCU (16-5, 8-3 Big 12) to five sets on their home court Friday night, the Horned Frog's first five setter of the season at home.
TCU took the first two sets by scores of 25-20, but Iowa State responded remaining ahead in the third to extend the match (25-22). After falling behind 8-3 in the fourth, ISU came back to find the lead and take the fourth 25-19 to force a fifth. TCU led throughout the deciding set to take the match.
Morgan Brandt put herself into the program top 10 in career assists with 25 in the match and 2,489 through her career. Brandt also had seven digs and an ace in the match.
Brooke Stonestreet kept many plays alive as the senior went on to total a match-leading 23 digs, her eighth match this season and 26th of her career with 20 or more. Stonestreet added six assists, an ace and a perfect reception percentage with 28 receptions to her stat line.
Faith DeRonde extended her streak to five matches with 10 or more kills, leading ISU with 14 at .275 hitting. Kiersten Schmitt, Rachel Van Gorp and Lilly Wachholz made for four Cyclones in double figures each totaling 10. Van Gorp, the reigning Big 12 Rookie of the Week, had her third double-double with 10 digs. Schmitt tied Amiree Hendricks-Walker for the match lead with five total blocks.
SET ONE
TCU held a narrow lead to start, but at 9-8 the Horned Frogs went on to build a four-point lead as ISU called its first timeout. As the TCU scoring streak was snapped, a long rally broke out but TCU came out with the point to put the score at 14-9. The Cyclones cut their deficit in half on a run of three to make it 19-16 after kills by DeRonde and Wachholz and a TCU attack error to force a timeout by the home team. Iowa State would come within a pair at 19-21, but the Horned Frogs went on to take the opening frame 25-20.
SET TWO
Wachholz tipped the ball over for the kill to get ISU on the board, while Maya Duckworth did the same for the next point to tie it at 2s. Iowa State went up by two at 7-5 after Schmitt and Pam McCune put up the block, but TCU flipped the lead at 8-7. The Horned Frogs continued to hold the lead while Iowa State kept close and tied it 13-13. Van Gorp delivered a kill to make it a two-point set, but TCU went on to find a five-point advantage late (19-14). The Cyclones then scored three straight out of a timeout at 19-17, and a DeRonde ace cut TCU's lead to one (20-21). TCU took the set on a 4-0 run, 25-20. Both sides struggled to hit efficiently, holding a hitting percentage under .100 in the set.
SET THREE
ISU took a 4-2 lead after Van Gorp and Tierney Jackson put up the block, and the Cyclones remained up after another block by Schmitt and Jackson. TCU called a timeout as Iowa State led 13-9 following a Stonestreet ace. A Jackson kill extended the run to four, but a TCU run of its own made the scoreboard read 14-13 to force a Cyclone timeout. Van Gorp's third kill of the night halted the run, but TCU pressed on to knot the score at 15s. Five ties followed, but Iowa State continued to remain in front. ISU went up 23-21 after TCU was called out of rotation and found set point following a long rally Van Gorp capped with a kill. Van Gorp would seal the set with another kill at 25-22, her third late in the set.
SET FOUR
TCU went out to an early 8-3 lead, but Iowa State pushed forward to find a 10-9 lead on an Hendricks-Walker kill. Kills by DeRonde, Hendricks-Walker and Van Gorp aided ISU to take a 4-0 run and lead 14-11. TCU flipped the lead at 16-15, but ISU took it back at 18-17 after another Van Gorp kill and block by Schmitt and Jackson. After a successful ISU challenge, the score flipped to keep Iowa State in front 19-18. Jackson followed with the ace to cause a timeout by the home team. The scoring spree continued out of the timeout as ISU tallied four straight to lead 23-19. Schmitt's 10th kill made it set point ISU, and a TCU attack error tied up the match 2-2.
SET FIVE
TCU began ahead 5-2 in the decisive set, and following a successful TCU challenge the Horned Frogs kept the lead at 6-3. The teams swapped sides as TCU led 8-3, with Iowa State taking the next two after a TCU service error and a Van Gorp kill as she tooled the block. Iowa State brought things back within two at 11-9, but couldn't put together a run as TCU stayed up. A DeRonde kill and Brandt ace fought off match point, but TCU took the match by a fifth set score of 15-11.
