AMES, Iowa – Members of the Iowa State football program met with media today to discuss the start of spring football. Practice begins for the Cyclones on Thursday, the first of 15 practice sessions that concludes Saturday, April 20 with a Spring Game at Jack Trice Stadium.
Head coach Matt Campbell returns for his ninth season leading the Cyclones. Only Dan McCarney (12 seasons) and Clay Stapleton (10 seasons) have coached the Cyclones longer than Campbell, who enters the season just three wins shy of tying McCarney's school record of 56 victories.
The Cyclone defensive unit returns nine starters under the direction of defensive coordinator Jon Heacock, who has been on Campbell's staff since his time at Toledo.
Iowa State's defense had 16 interceptions, including 13 from the safety position, which is led by senior Beau Freyler. Freyler was the only Big 12 player with at least three interceptions that also ranked in the Top 10 for tackles.
Iowa State's offense had a bit of a makeover for the second-straight season as offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase left for a position with the Los Angeles Rams.
Insert Taylor Mouser, who is in his ninth season working at Iowa State and his 10th working alongside Campbell. The Chandler, Arizona, native has coached the Cyclone tight ends since 2021, coaching NFL players Charlie Kolar and Chase Allen.
Like the defense, Mouser's offensive unit returns nine players led by Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year Rocco Becht, who broke all of Brock Purdy's ISU freshman records, completing 321 passes for 3,120 yards and 23 touchdowns.
