Iowa State Downs Houston In Regular Season Finale

AMES, Iowa. – Iowa State (4-16, 2-11) grabbed their second Big 12 win of the year, downing Houston (2-18, 0-13) on Sunday, 5-2, in the final match of the regular season.
Iowa State played shorthanded but battled to get the doubles point against the Cougars. Ashlee Narker and Anna Supapitch Kuearum got their second doubles win of the weekend against Houston's Sophie Schouten and Gabriela Cortes, dominating the match, 6-2. Valeska San Martin and Juliette Nask followed closely behind as the pair grabbed a win over Maria Dzemeshkevich and Laura Slisane, 6-3, allowing the Cyclones to clinch their first doubles point since Feb. 9 against Old Dominion. The match headed to singles tied at 1-1.
Kuearum took care of business at the No. 1 singles spot against Dzemeshkevich, grabbing a straight-set singles victory, 6-1, 6-2. Kuearum's win put the Cyclones up 2-1 and within two wins of clinching the match. It also marked Kuearum's 10th singles win of season, putting her record at 10-7 at the No. 1 singles spot for the year.
Narker followed up right behind Kuearum with a huge win over Slisane, 6-3, 6-1, giving the Cyclones a 3-1 lead over Houston and putting them within one win of clinching the match.
Nask stepped up to the No. 3 singles spot against Houston's Schouten and dominated the first set, 6-0, before dropping the second set, 6-1. With it all coming down to the third set, she stepped up and took down Schouten, 6-2, allowing the Cyclones to clinch the match, 4-1. This win marked Nask's first Big 12 win and her first dual meet win as a Cyclone.
Gala Arangio grabbed a singles win to finish off the day as she took down Elena Trencheva, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.

Iowa State competes in the Big 12 Championships next week. The first round of play will begin on Wednesday.
