MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Iowa State (3-15, 1-10) tennis team dropped a back-and-forth match with West Virginia (13-10, 3-8) on Sunday, 4-1.
The Cyclones' only point of the day came from Anna Supapitch Kuearum, who went up against West Virginia's Love-Star Alexis at the No. 1 singles spot. She would dominate in consecutive sets, taking the match, 6-3, 6-1. Kuearum went undefeated at the No. 1 singles spot this weekend after an impressive three-set win over Cincinnati's Rosalia Gruszczynska on Friday.
In doubles, the Cyclones would play shorthanded. The pairing of Kuearum and Juliette Nask fought hard against West Virginia's Momoko Nagato and Michaela Kucharova but ultimately fell, 6-1, allowing West Virginia to claim the doubles point and a 2-0 lead heading into singles.
Gala Arangio's match finished soon after Kuearum's singles victory. The freshman from Argentina played at the No. 4 singles spot for the first time this year. Arangio went up against Tatiana Lipatova, where she would battle hard but come up short falling in the match 6-1, 6-2. This win gave West Virginia a 3-1 lead, one win away from clinching the match.
West Virginia clinched the match after Nagato went up against Ashlee Narker at the No. 2 singles spot. Narker fell in the first set, 6-3, but battled back in the second, taking the set, 6-1. The freshman from Saint Ives, Australia fought back and forth in the third before ultimately falling, 4-6, allowing West Virginia to clinch the match, 4-1.
All other singles matches were abandoned after the clinch.
