JUBA, South Sudan - Former Iowa State men's basketball player Marial Shayok has been named to Team South Sudan for the Paris Olympics. Shayok is a member of the 12-person team that will compete in the Paris Olympics, which will take place July 27-Aug. 10.
Shayok is the fifth former Iowa State men's basketball player to qualify for the Paris Olympics, the second-most of any school in the country behind Kentucky's six former players. Tyrese Haliburton is a member of the USA Men's National Team, George Conditt IV is a member of the Puerto Rico National Team, Nick Weiler-Babb is a member of Team Germany and Melvin Ejim will be playing for Team Canada. Haliburton, Conditt IV, Shayok and Weiler-Babb played together at Iowa State in 2018-19, while Ejim was at Iowa State from 2010-14.
As part of Group C, the South Sudan men will face Puerto Rico on July 28, the United States on July 31Â and Serbia on Aug. 3Â in the first round of the Olympic tournament. The 5-on-5 Olympic basketball group phase will take place in Lille, France, before the tournament moves to Paris for knockout and medal rounds.
In his one season with the Cyclones, Shayok averaged 18.7 points per game, earning him All-Big 12 First Team honors and Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention. Shayok also led Iowa State to Big 12 Tournament title in 2019 while winning Big 12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player and punching a ticket to the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Shayok was also a Julius Erving Award Finalist and a one-time Big 12 Player of the Week. Shayok was drafted No. 54 by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2019 NBA Draft and most recently played for the Shandong Hi-Speed Kirin for the Chinese Basketball Association.
