AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State men's golf team kicks off the 2024-25 season Sunday at the Gopher Invitational in Independence, Minn. The Cyclones return four players that played 34 rounds last season, while a fifth returner played in 27.
COURSE INFORMATION
The Gopher Invitational has called Windsong Farm Golf Club home for the past 10 years. Windsong Farm is consistently rated among Minnesota's top golf courses, with additional national recognition as one of the top modern courses in the nation. Originally created by John Fought and Minnesota native Tom Lehman, the course's breathtaking views and unmatched conditions contribute to the ultimate golfing experience. Opened in 2003, Windsong measures 7,380 yards and is a par 71 layout. Teams will play 36 holes on Sunday before finishing with 18 holes on Monday.
KEY STORYLINES
-Senior Luke Gutschewski returns for the Cyclones, having qualified for the last two NCAA Regionals. He is the first individual in program history to play in two NCAA Regionals as an individual. Gutschewski's 71.56 career stroke average is the best in program history. Gutschewski has the two best single-season stroke averages in school history with a 70.78 his sophomore year and a 70.86 last season.
-Junior Paul Beauvy joins Gutschewski in the top five of the career stroke average list, as he sits in fourth at 72.1. Beauvy has 11 sub-70 rounds in his career and has turned in five Top 10 finishes.
-Owen Sawyer's 73.03 stroke average was the fifth-best in program history by a freshman last season.
-The Cyclones picked up three wins last season, taking home the titles at the Iowa Fall Classic, the Zach Johnson Invitational and the Tiger Collegiate Invitational. It was the first time since 2016-17 that ISU has won three events in the same season. The Cyclones will return to both the Zach Johnson Invitational and the Tiger Collegiate Invitational this season to defend their titles.
