LAWRENCE, Kan. – Iowa State (14-3, 4-2 Big 12) dropped the four setter on the road Friday night at No. 15 Kansas (13-7, 4-2 Big 12). Iowa State came out strong winning the first set, but the hosts followed taking the next three for the win.
Set scores on the night stood at 25-21, 18-25, 20-25, 19-25.
Nayeli Ti'a entered double figures in the second set and ended the match with 15 kills to lead Iowa State. The first-year Cyclone extends her streak to five matches with 10 or more. Setter Morgan Brandt ended her night with 39 assists, eight digs, two blocks and three kills.
Rachel Van Gorp was all over keeping the court covered, totaling 18 digs. It's her 22nd straight match with 10 or more.
SET ONE
ISU kept within three of the Jayhawks through the early goings, and the Cyclones followed with a run of three featuring two kills and an ace to tie things at 13s. Iowa State took its first lead at 16-15 after a kill by Ti'a, and the Cyclones reached 20 (20-18) after another Ti'a kill. Reagan Hanfelt served up an ace as ISU reached set point at 24-21, forcing a KU timeout. Iowa State ended the set next following Ti'a's sixth kill on just nine swings. ISU hit at .395 in the opening frame.
SET TWO
With KU up 3-1, ISU followed flipping the lead on a run of three. Three lead changes followed, but Kansas would then go up by four (13-9) with Iowa State calling a timeout next. Ti'a's eighth kill and a Cyclone block brought it back within a pair but Kansas remained with the advantage. After two more kills by Ti'a and Faith DeRonde's third kill on as many swings, Kansas called a timeout as ISU drew within two (19-17). Kansas came out of the timeout firing on its way to tying the match with a set score of 25-18.
SET THREE
Iowa State took the first two on a Hanfelt tip kill and block by Pam McCune and Morgan Brandt. It again remained tight, with a tie at 9s as Hanfelt delivered another kill. At the media timeout, the host held the lead of 15-12 and would reach 20 as Iowa State held 16. The Jayhawks hit over .400 through the frame as the took the match lead with a set score of 25-20.
SET FOUR
A pair of blocks put the Cyclone up 2-0, while a kill by Maya Duckworth made it 3-1. A lead change came at 5-4, but the set remained close. With Abbi Brenizer coming in for the first time of her collegiate career, the junior put down her first kill to make it 8-8. Another tie was seen at 11s, and the set was brought to the media timeout at 15-13 with the home team up. A long rally broke out, but Kansas came out on top to extend a run of three bringing the score to 17-13. A block by Duckworth and McCune trimmed the deficit to two (20-18), but KU went on to find match point at 24-19. A KU kill came next to end the match.
