MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Facing its fourth ranked opponent of the season, Iowa State (4-8-3, 1-7-1 Big 12) was unable to spring the upset as it fell on the road to No. 24 West Virginia (11-2-3, 6-0-3 Big 12) at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, 1-0.
The loss officially eliminates Iowa State from Big 12 Tournament contention and extends WVU's undefeated match streak to 13.
After ISU failed to score on a pair of premium opportunities early, West Virginia struck first in the 22nd minute off an Anna Hauer goal. The Cyclones would trail by one at the half and were limited to just two second-half shots.
Five different Cyclones - Megan Walters, Makenna Marshall, Lucy Froitzheim, Ella Ciardullo and Regan John - recorded shots on the night. Ciardullo, Froitzheim and John had shots on goal. Chloe Broughton, Makenna Marshall and Erin Hopewell played the full 90 on the field, while Cannistraro did so in the net. On the night, Cannistraro collected five saves.
For West Virginia, Leoni Maya led the way with six shot attempts, placing one on goal. Five other Mountaineers had multiple shots on the evening, with Hauer scoring the team's lone goal. WVU's leading scorer, Taylor White, was limited to just two shots, but had an assist on Hauer's score. In net, Bailey Herfurth had three saves in her clean sheet.
West Virginia outshot the Cyclones on the night, 19-5, and drew more corner kicks, 10-3. ISU held the edge in saves (6-3) while each team committed seven fouls.
How it Happened
The Cyclones created a brilliant opportunity just forty seconds into the match, as Ciardullo found herself on the receiving end of a perfect pass into the box only to see the ball saved by Herfurth.
ISU got another crack in the 11th minute, as Megan Walters launched a deep shot just to see it carom off of the crossbar.
ISU's fiery start out of the gate was responded to with three shots in the next three minutes by the Mountaineers with two being blocked and the third saved. WVU eventually did break through though in the first half, as Hauer scored on a White assist to put West Virginia on top, 1-0.
ISU got one more opportunity in the first, a shot from Froitzheim, but it was collected by Herfurth and the teams would go into the break with WVU leading, 1-0. At the half, WVU had more shots (9-3) and corners (6-2) than the Cyclones.
West Virginia's defense tightened up even more after the break, as it held ISU to just two more shots on the night. A Regan John attempt in the 85th minute was the team's best chance of the second stanza, but it too was collected by Herfurth as WVU went on to take the game.\
Fannon's Thoughts
"We were excellent tonight, once again, but weren't able to finish our chances when we were on top. It's impossible to ask for anything more from our team than that, and I'm really proud of everyone."
