Ames, Iowa – Stanislava Shulzhenko and Mari Paz Alberto Vilar took home the victory in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championships in Orlando on Wednesday afternoon. The pair represent the first doubles team in school history to compete in the doubles championships.
Shulzhenko and Alberto Vilar took down No. 84 Bojana Pozder and Bianca Molnar in a three-set thriller. The Cyclone fell into an early 2-0 deficit in the first set, before rallying and winning the set, 7-5. In set two, the opposite came true, as the Cyclones went up 3-0, before Notre Dame won six the next seven games and taking the second set, 6-4. This brought the match to a 10-point tiebreak, where Shulzhenko and Alberto Vilar would come out on top, 10-6.
The pair will take on USC's Lily Fairclough and Daniela Borruel on Thursday in the Round of 16. Time TBA.
