WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – No. 10 Iowa State (9-0) handed top-ranked Purdue (8-1) its first home, non-conference loss since 2019 as it blasted the Boilermakers by 23 points, winning 81-58.
The loss was Purdue's second-worst at home and was the largest margin of defeat against a non-conference team. ISU's 23-point win is tied for the largest margin of victory on the road against the top-ranked team. It is also tied for the largest margin of victory over the No. 1 team on the road ever. It is the highest-ranked road win ever for Iowa State. It is also the second-largest margin of victory by ISU over a Top 25 team.
After a back-and-forth first stanza that featured seven lead changes, Iowa State blew things wide open in the second half, running its lead to as large as 27 points. Four Cyclones finished in double figures, and ISU outscored the Boilermakers in the paint, 34-30.
Milan Momcilovic continued his hot shooting, notching a game-high 20 points. Killyan Toure (13), Blake Buchanan (12) and Joshua Jefferson (11) joined him in double figures. Tamin Lipsey returned to the lineup after missing the last three contests and scored nine points, pulled down five boards and dished a game-best eight assists. Buchanan was huge on the boards, pulling down a game-high of nine. All but one Cyclone who played scored.
For Purdue, Braden Smith led the charge with 11 points, five rebounds and eight assists. Oscar Cluff and Daniel Jacobsen each finished with ten points for the Boilermakers, while Trey Kaufman-Renn had a team-best nine boards. Smith would also finish with a game-high four steals but had six turnovers.
ISU outshot Purdue from the floor (54% to 41%) and shot a blistering 48% from deep. The Cyclones forced 15 Purdue turnovers and converted them into 17 points of their own. The Cyclones lost the rebound battle (32-33), but recorded more blocks (6-2) and had more assists (19-17).
How it Happened
Both teams combined to shoot 0-5 to start the game, as there was some feeling out in the early stages of the contest. A Braden Smith jumper got things started and was answered immediately by a Blake Buchanan slam as things started to pick up.
It was a smooth operation by both sides, as the first media timeout didn't come until the 14:02 mark of the first half, with Purdue leading 11-9. Following a pair of baskets by each side, a Jefferson triple gave ISU its second lead of the contest, 14-13.
Purdue responded by opening up a five-point lead, its largest of the half, 21-16, with just under 10 minutes on the timer. The Cyclones would then finish the half on a 19-10 run and take a four-point lead, 35-31, into the break.
The first half featured seven lead changes, as ISU was shooting 48 percent from the floor and 36 percent from deep. Jefferson had a team-high eight points, while Momcilovic had seven.
The Cyclones came out of the gates on fire in the second half, pushing the four-point halftime edge to 15 in a matter of three minutes as they led 48-33 with 17:17 to go.
It was all Iowa State from there, as ISU unleashed a barrage of second-half shooting to pull away. The Cyclones finished the second stanza shooting 59.4% from the floor and 58.3% from downtown.
Key Performer
Milan Momcilovic again had it stuck on automatic for the Cyclones, as the junior poured in a game-high 20 points, burying three triples. Momcilovic knocked it in from all areas of the floor, also pulling down a rebound, dishing an assist and nabbing two steals.
