Cyclones Beat Colorado State, 5-1

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – No. 54 Iowa State (6-2) rallied to win for the first time this season when dropping the doubles point, defeating Colorado State (1-8), 5-1, Wednesday afternoon.

The Cyclones had been 0-2 this season when losing the doubles point, but strong singles play prevented the streak from continuing.

Despite forfeiting at No. 3 doubles, Colorado State was able to secure the doubles point. On court two, Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya and Diana Lizarazo defeated Suzanie Pretorius and Anna Supapitch Kuearum, 6-3, leaving the point up to No. 1 doubles.

The Cyclone pairing of Julia Camblor and Mari Paz Alberto Vilar jumped out to a 4-1 lead but were unable to hold off CSU's duo of Victoria Erechtchenko and Sarah Weekley, falling 7-5.

With the score tied 1-1 following CSU's forfeit at No. 6 singles, Iowa State immediately got off to a hot start in singles play.

ISU took the opening set on all five singles courts and went up 2-1 in the match when Valeska San Martin Ramirez rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win against Lizarazo on court five.

Pretorius extended the Cyclone advantage to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Logan Voeks at No. 4 singles.

The Cyclones wrapped up the match with Kuearum and Camblor winning simultaneously at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Kuearum beat Weekley, 6-4, 6-3, and Camblor disposed of Erechtchenko, 7-5, 6-4, to complete the Cyclone victory.

Iowa State returns to action Friday when it plays No. 72 Colorado (6-2) in the Big 12 opener for both teams.
