No. 54 Cyclones Beat No. 72 Colorado In Conference Opener Thriller

Ames, Iowa – The No. 54 Iowa State tennis team took down No. 72 Colorado, 4-3, in a thriller to open Big 12 play. With the win, the Cyclones improved to 7-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference action before a date with No. 13 Texas Tech on Sunday.
In doubles, Colorado's Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec handed Anna Supapitch Kuearum and Cristina Ramos Sierra their first loss of the season on court one, 6-3. Mari Paz Alberto Vilar and Julia Camblor then defeated Anya Nelson and Rixt van der Werff on court two, 6-1 to make it all-square. The Buffs would clinch the doubles point tho as Mila Stanojevic and Lera Alexin downed Suzanie Pretorius and Valeska San Martin Ramirez, 6-4 on court three.
In singles, San Martin Ramirez knocked off Alexin, 6-2, 6-4 on court six to get the Cyclones on the board. Colorado would take the lead back, however, when Werff defeated Ramos Sierra on court four, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
ISU took its first lead of the match though by getting back-to-back victories from No. 81 Kuearum, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 on court one and Pretorius, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 on court four.
With the Cyclones up 3-2 and needing one win from either Camblor or Alberto Vilar in the final set, the intensity was on full display. On court two, Camblor fell to El Sayed, 5-7, 7-6, 1-6, but Alberto Vilar took down Betina Tokac, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 on court three as Tokac picked up her fourth overruling of the match, resulting in a disqualification and Cyclone victory.
The Cyclones and Lady Raiders meet Sunday at noon in Lubbock, Texas.
