YOUNGSVILLE, La. – Freshman Sami Potvin achieved perfection Sunday afternoon, retiring all 15 batters she faced as Iowa State (9-9) took down Grambling State (5-10) in five innings, winning 10-0, to conclude the Mardi Gras Mambo
Potvin moved to 2-0 on the season, earning a career-high nine strikeouts along the way – the most by any Cyclone this season. She becomes the first pitcher since Tori Torrescano in 2013 to throw a complete game and not allow a hit. The last time ISU didn't allow a hit in a game was in 2023 when a pair of Cyclones combined to no-hit Fordham.
Not to be lost in Potvin's perfect afternoon were the Cyclones bats. ISU scored 10 runs for the second consecutive game, collecting 11 hits. Sereniti Trice and Reagan Bartholomew each notched a pair of hits, with both Maddie Knowles and Ashley Minor hitting their first homers of the season.
Knowles led the team with two RBI, with both coming on her shot in the fourth inning. Seven other Cyclones collected an RBI, with Tatum Johnson drawing the team's only walk. ISU left just one runner on base – a low for the team on the year.
For Grambling, three players struck out twice, as the Tigers were unable to connect with Potvin's pitches.
Chloe Wilson (0-1) started in the circle for Grambling, allowing five runs on five hits in the first two frames. Erin Gibbs would replace Wilson in the third and finish out the contest, allowing five runs on six hits.
How it Happened
The Cyclones got the scoring started in the first frame, putting five on the board. Trice led the game off with a bunt single, and after she stole second, advanced to third on an Angelina Allen groundout. Jessie Clemons would send a single into left to plate Trice and put ISU up. Eventually, Clemons would find herself on third, with Sydney Malott on second, and Bartholomew up to the plate. Reagan sent a slow-rolling single in front of the catcher who attempted to throw out a runner but overthrew, allowing both Clemons and Malott to score. ISU scored run four via a Johnson RBI triple and RBI five with a Paige Zender sacrifice fly.
Iowa State added three more in the fourth, pushing its lead to 8-0. Johnson led the frame with a walk and then, one batter later, Knowles cranked her first homer of the season and second of her career. Following Knowles' homer, McKenna Andrews tallied her first career triple. With one out, Trice stepped back into the box and singled to the pitcher, scoring Andrews, and putting ISU up by eight.
ISU piled on three more runs in the fifth to push its lead to 10-0. Following a leadoff flyout, Minor came in to pinch hit. She promptly cranked her first home run of the season dead center to make it 9-0 in favor of the Cyclones. Bartholomew would follow Minor's big fly with double down the right field line to put a runner in scoring position with two outs. Pinch-hitting, Victoria Prado entered the batter's box and collected her first career hit – a single – to plate Bartholomew and make it 10-0.
