AMES, Iowa – No. 59 Iowa State defeated No. 31 Arizona, 4-3, in an instant classic Friday evening at the Iowa State Tennis Facility. The Cyclones improve to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 action, while Arizona falls to 10-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
After dropping the doubles point, singles play was an absolute battle with five of six matches going to a third set.
Senior Anna Supapitch Kuearum, the nation's No. 97 player, got the Cyclones on the board with an impressive 6-2, 7-5 win over No. 37 Josie Usereau. Kuearum trailed 4-0 in the second set before rallying for the victory, She is now 10-1 this spring, recording her 15th career conference singles win, which ties her for second-most in school history, just one shy of the school record.
Valeska San Martin Ramirez gave the Cyclones the early edge with a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 win against Zoya Chulak at No. 6 singles, but Arizona bounced right back with wins at No.2 and No. 5 singles to go up 3-2.
The Cyclones needed wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles with a pair of freshmen left on the courts.
Cristina Ramos Sierra was the first to seize the moment, beating Danielle Tuhten, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, to leave the match up to the No.3 battle between her teammate Mari Paz Alberto Vilar and Arizona's Martyna Ostrzygalo, the nation's No. 116 player.
Alberto Vilar took the opening set, 6-4, but Ostrzygalo won the second by the same score. With all eyes in the facility on the rookie, she delivered with a 6-3 win to record her first career win against a ranked opponent.
Arizona took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
Iowa State returns to action Sunday when it hosts No. 26 Arizona State at 11 a.m.
