AMES, Iowa – Former Iowa State and NFL wide receiver J.J. Moses is the recipient of the 2025 Pillar of Character Award from the Robert D. and Billie Ray Center at Drake University.
Moses, a Waterloo, Iowa, native, played at Iowa State from 1997-2000 and then played five years in the NFL, most notably with the Houston Texans in 2003 and 2004.
He was a key player in the emergence of Iowa State football during his time in Ames. The team went from one win during his true freshman season to a 9-3 record as a senior, which was tied for the most wins in school history until the 2024 Cyclones won 11 games.
He was a First Team All-Big 12 performer as a kick returner and a second-team pick at wide receiver as a senior in 2000.
Following his playing career, Moses has transformed himself into a corporate public speaker, displaying his passion and energy during his presentations to some of the biggest corporations out there.
He has been back working with the Texans since 2008, first as an ambassador for the organization and since 2018 as the Director of Player Development. He works to assist players with their transition to the NFL and help them prepare for their post-NFL career.
Moses also works alongside FuelUp to Play60, an in-school nutrition and physical activity program launched by the National Dairy Council and the NFL in collaboration with the USD to help encourage today's youth to lead healthier lives. He contributed as an on-air personality for 89.3 KSBJ, one of the largest inspirational radio stations in the country.
In 2012, his story of making it into the NFL was featured on Oprah's Lifeclass entitled "Dream Big."
Moses will be honored at An All-Star Evening on April 11 at the Ron Pearson Center in West Des Moines. Tickets are still available for purchase by visiting the Ray Center website.
