AMES, Iowa – Iowa State kicker Kyle Konrardy was named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week for the second-consecutive week while defensive lineman Tamatoa McDonough was selected as Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. The Cyclone defensive line unit was also recognized as the Big 12 Defensive Line of the Week for the second time this season.
Iowa State has now been awarded nine league weekly honors this season, including the Special Teams Player of the Week in Weeks 0, 1 and 2. This marks Konrardy's third career Big 12 weekly honor and his second in a row.
Kyle Konrardy – Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week
Konrardy hit a 54-yard game-winning field goal to put Iowa State in front of rival Iowa, 16-13, with 1:52 remaining in the final quarter. It was the same distance as his game-winner against the Hawkeyes last season in Kinnick Stadium.
Konrardy's 54-yard field goal Saturday came on the heels of his 63-yard make against South Dakota last week, which is the longest in nation this season. The Dubuque, Iowa native is the only FBS kicker with two makes from 50-plus yards this season and owns two of the 10 longest made field goals nationally this year (63, 54).
Konrardy is now 2-of-2 on kicks from 50-plus yards this season and 4-of-5 in his career.
Saturday against the Hawkeyes, he tied a career-best with a 3-of-3 mark on field goal attempts, hitting from 44, 27 and 54 yards. He also handled kickoff duties, sending 2-of-5 kicks out of the end zone for a touchback.
Tamatoa McDonough – Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week
McDonough delivered the final blows following Konrardy's game-winning field goal. The Yale transfer sacked Hawkeye quarterback Mark Gronowski on back-to-back plays to help seal the win for ISU. The sacks came on second and third down with Iowa having no timeouts on its final drive.
McDonough finished with five tackles, his most as a Cyclone, and a QB hurry against the Hawkeyes.
Cyclone Defensive Line – Big 12 Defensive Line of the Week
As a unit, the Cyclone defensive line made life difficult for the Hawkeye offense for much of the game. They kept the pressure on Gronowski, combining for three QB hurries and two sacks as the defense held Iowa to just 83 yards passing and 214 yards of total offense.
Domonique Orange finished with a career-high six tackles while going up against Hawkeye center Logan Jones who was an honorable mention All-American and a First-Team All-Big Ten selection last season. McDonough finished with five tackles, including two sacks. Orange, McDonough and Ikenna Ezeogu all registered QB hurries.
