AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) will travel to Urbana-Champaign as they face off against the Illinois Fighting Illini (0-1, 0-1 Big Ten) at the ARC Pool on October 16th & 17th for their second dual meet of the season.
THE OPPONENT – Illinois
This matchup between the Cyclones and the Fighting Illini will be their 15th meeting since their first competition in 1980. Last year in Ames, Illinois won both days with a score of 121-65 on Friday and 123-82 on Saturday.
This will also be the second dual meet of the season for Illinois after a close loss to Purdue, 167.5-132.5.
The Illini will be honoring their seniors with Senior Day during Saturday's portion of the dual.
LAST TIME OUT – Florida State Invite
Iowa State returns to the dual meet style after placing second at the Florida State Invite last weekend in Tallahassee.
Grace Swoboda had a staggering performance, sweeping the breaststroke for the second time this season while setting three meet records in the 50, 100 & 200 Breast and breaking two school records in the 100 Breast (59.65) & 200 Breast (2:11.18).
Freshman Asia Salvato also made her mark, winning her first collegiate event in the 200 Fly (2:03.04) and placing ninth on the Iowa State all-time performers in the event.
Senior Emma Kuhn earned a second-place finish in the 200 IM and a third-place finish in the 50 Fly.
On the boards, freshman Katie Malm and sophomore Iona Moffat both earned runners-up with Malm in the 1-meter and Moffat on 3-meter. Malm (267.03) also earned her second Zone-cut in consecutive events on 1-meter.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR – Breaststroke, Freestyle, and Diving
Grace Swoboda will look to accomplish her third sweep of breaststroke events in the first three events of the season against strong competition from Illinois upperclassmen.
The variety of talent in freestyle could be a major key for Iowa State to grab a win in Urbana-Champaign this time around. From sprints to long-distance, and from newcomers to seniors, the Cyclones have multiple swimmers in each freestyle event capable of accumulating major points.
The diving trio of Maggie Bendell, Katie Malm, and Iona Moffat will seek to continue their recent success from Nebraska and the Florida State Invite. With the addition of junior Abby Tollefson looking to repeat her first place showing against Illinois last year on 1-meter, the diving team will have high aspirations in helping Iowa State get its first win of the season.
ON DECK – South Dakota
The Cyclones will be back in action at Beyer Hall on November 6th & 7th against the South Dakota Coyotes. This will be a two-day dual meet taking place at 5:00 p.m. on Friday the 6th and 11:00 a.m. on Saturday the 7th.
